Winter Grazing: Why Pasture Needs Rest – and What to Do Instead

What winter turnout really does to grass, gut and hooves – and how to build better alternatives

When the grass stops growing in autumn, many horse owners continue using their pastures throughout the winter – often without realising the long-term consequences.

But winter grazing doesn’t just damage your fields. It also affects your horse’s digestion, hoof health, and overall wellbeing.

In this Webtalk, we’ll explore:

• Why winter turnout on pasture leads to compaction, mud, and degraded soil

• How grass plant health and biodiversity suffer under constant trampling

• The hidden risks for your horse: from subclinical laminitis to mud fever and nutrient stress

• How to create simple, low-cost alternatives like drylots, sacrifice areas or paddock tracks – even with limited space or budget

You’ll learn how to protect your pastures during the critical winter months, while still giving your horse the turnout, social contact, and fresh air they need.

Let’s rethink winter turnout – for the sake of the land and your horse’s long-term health.
